    Operations Manager - Thurnscoe

    Are you a dynamic, people‑focused leader with a passion for engineering precision and operational excellence? We’re looking for an Operations Manager to take a pivotal role in shaping the success of our Thurnscoe site. In this key position, you will lead and inspire multidisciplinary teams, ensuring that all Design and Manufacturing activities are delivered safely, accurately, efficiently, and to the highest technical standard.

     

    About the Role

     

    This is a role for someone who thrives on bringing people and processes together. You’ll champion personnel engagement and development, uphold engineering accuracy and timeliness, and orchestrate effective workflow management across the site. As the vital link between Design, Manufacturing and Contracts, you’ll ensure every engineered solution is feasible, compliant, buildable, and delivered on time.

    What You’ll Do

     

    Deliver on Corporate Objectives

     • Support the delivery of engineering and manufacturing right first time, service, safety, quality, delivery, cost and people objectives to budget.

     • Monitor performance KPIs, identifying root causes of inaccuracies or delays and provide leadership to implement corrective action.

    • Support technical initiatives, standardisation and design efficiency improvements.

    • Act at all times as an ambassador of Balmoral Tanks, and uphold the core values of Accountability, Integrity, Motivation, Respect, Innovation and customer service.

    • Provide input to yearly budgets and maintain accurate reporting.

    Resource, Workload & Capability Management

    • Ensure teams are appropriately resourced, trained and supported to meet customer demand.

    • Drive coordination between Design, Production control, Manufacturing and Contracts to avoid technical bottlenecks and improve efficiency.

    Technical Governance

    • Develop design/drafting capabilities in line with product development and customer requirements.

    • Develop the Design for Manufacturing process to eradicate wastes.

    • Support adherence to engineering standards, design guidelines, drafting practices and accuracy checks.

    • Ensure timely completion of drawing approvals, reviews and technical signoff.

    • Maintain processes that reduce rework, errors, RFIs and design related NCRs.

    Systems & Data Accuracy

    • Ensure design data, BOM accuracy, routing, timings and technical specifications are correctly maintained in the relevant systems.

    • Support system improvements, including templates, standards and bill of materials structures to increase accuracy and reduce lead time.

    Quality Management

     • Ensure NCRs are investigated promptly with effective root cause corrective actions.

     • Lead or support technical root cause analysis for product, design & manufacturing issues.

    Health & Safety

    • Ensure activities and instructions consider safety at every stage (DfS).

     • Assist risk-based assessments where applicable.

    • Reinforce that safety is non-negotiable across design, engineering and production interfaces.

    Development of People

    • Support development of staff with formal professional development opportunities and career succession plans.

    • Use competency tools to monitor and uplift performance to best in class.

    • Identify high-potential talent for leadership development pathways.

    • Deliver annual objectives for all staff in line with the 5-year plan.

    Promote Engineering & Product Understanding

    • Build strong product knowledge within engineering, design and operations teams.

    • Support customer-specific technical requirements and bespoke product solutions.

    • Encourage a culture of engineering excellence and customer focused design.

    Continuous Improvement

    • Ensure all processes deliver value and align with customer expectations.

     • Maintain and drive continuous improvement plans, including standardisation of drawings, templates and documentation.

     • Champion the “Lean” philosophy and introduce training packages for everyone within the Operations team.

    Equipment, Tools & Technical Resources

    • Ensure teams have appropriate software, tools, equipment and technical resources.

     • Maintain awareness of new technologies to ensure Balmoral remains at the forefront of innovation.

    Forecasting & Reporting

     • Forecast and deliver an accurate rolling three month revenue forecast.

    • Report on capacity, workloads, bottlenecks, equipment constraints and resourcing needs.

    • Create an Operating rhythm that delivers accurate and timely communication to all.

    Experience: 

    • Demonstrable experience in engineering or design within a manufacturing environment (essential). 

    • Experience leading cross functional teams to deliver engineered products on time (essential). 

    • Strong technical background with ability to support engineering problem solving (essential). 

    • Knowledge of fabrication, welding and engineered assemblies (desirable). 

    Skills & Abilities  

    • Ability to interpret technical drawings and engineering specifications. 

    • Strong knowledge of configuration management and change control processes. 

    • Good understanding of profit & loss and cost drivers within engineered products. 

    • Skilled in MS Office; CAD or design system awareness beneficial. 

    • Excellent communication skills, able to translate engineering detail to non engineers. 

    • Lean/CI experience, especially in engineering workflows. 

    • Strong decision making and organisational capability. 

    Qualifications

    • Degree or Level 4 VQ in Engineering, or a related discipline (highly desirable). 

    • IOSH Managing Safely
