Balmoral , a division of Balmoral Group, provides surface and subsurface buoyancy, insulation and elastomer products and services to the global energy, defence, subsea communications and oceanographic industries.

We are looking for a QC Supervisor to join the team. The job entails the close monitoring of all Quality Control activities ensuring the inspection of product and materials to specified requirements including project ITP requirements and approved specifications, drawings. The job holder shall ensure that any non-conformance is appropriately recorded, and remedial action has been verified prior to inspection release.


The job holder must be able to pro-actively and effectively communicate and collaborate at all levels across the business including clients and supply chain and demonstrate an enthusiastic approach to resolving problems. It is also expected that the person appointed is pro-active, in that the jobholder is expected to contribute to our aim of continuous improvement by advising on the operation of our Quality systems and processes, reporting any issues to line management as appropriate.


Main Duties

General Duties & Responsibilities

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support the coordination of client inspection activities - liaise with client appointed inspection resources as appropriate.

  • Conduct receipt inspection of product critical products/materials, verify conformance to specified requirements i.e. PO, drawing, specifications and that documentation and certification is correct.

  • Communicate and collaborate with Projects & Engineering to ensure that Client/Project QC requirements (inspection and test arrangements) are clearly defined understood and applied. Provide feedback to Projects & Engineering on ITP’s.

  • Conduct QC inspection on manufactured product in a timely manner including first/last off inspection, intermediate inspections as required by ITP– verify conformance to specified requirements i.e. drawing, standards and specifications.

  • Ensure that production process records of inspection are maintained and any deviations to specified requirements are recorded and reported appropriately.

  • Conduct line QC inspection of all production areas – provide feedback to Managers/ Supervisors as appropriate

  • Maintain effective Quality Control reporting systems within the company – provide quality reports as required.

  • Ensure non-conforming products and materials are clearly identified and segregated from unintended use.

  • Verify remedial action of rejected of manufactured components are suitable and sufficient - Authorise inspection release and update inspection status - ensure lessons are identified, shared, communicated and learned.

  • Ensure monitoring and measurement devices used during QC inspection activities are calibrated and maintained – ensure damaged, faulty or defective equipment is segregated from unintended use. Arrange for repair/rework (recalibration) as appropriate.

  • Ensure all documentation and certification is correct including in support the timely and accurate compilation of Manufacturing Data Books and Production Process records to Client/Project requirements.

  • Support the investigation and reporting of inspection problems and scrap products as appropriate.

  • Provide coaching, guidance, support and training on Quality Control activities across the business.

  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication to ensure objectives are met - develop good working relationships.

  • Supervise QC Inspectors - ensure QC resources are suitable and sufficient to address operational risk and are continually re-evaluated.

  • Regularly evaluate and review inspection resource arrangements - discuss forthcoming inspection activities, identify improvements to overall QC inspection resource coordination/ processes.

      Industry recognised welding inspection qualification e.g. CSWIP 3.0 Visual Weld Inspection

    • IRCA Internal Auditor Trained.

    • National/Vocational level 3 qualification in an engineering discipline e.g. ONC, SVQ




    • A minimum of 5 years working within a quality control discipline, with at least 2 of these years’ experience working in a role leading teams of inspectors.

    • Experienced in use of various monitoring and measuring devices and understanding of calibration requirements e.g. UKAS, certification requirements.

    • Relevant industry technical codes and standards e.g. BS EN 10204, NACE.

    • Mechanical/ metallurgical principles, e.g. radiography, NDT/NDE.

    • Relevant previous experience providing coaching, mentoring and development on Quality Control activities.


    • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment

    • Formal supervisory and/or leadership Training or Qualifications and Experience.

    • Understanding of Quality management principles, tools/techniques and terminology i.e. PDCA, ISO9000.

    • Able to read manufacturing/geometrical drawings.

    • Proficient in the use of the latest version of Microsoft Office.

    • Clear and effective communication skills, both written and oral.
